Wests Juniors is a Canberra based Junior Rugby Club focussed on providing a safe and positive environment for kids in the Belconnen region. Our aim is to encourage boys and girls to play Rugby, make friends and adopt values including Respect, Pride, and Teamwork while developing happy, healthy kids who share a love of the game of Rugby. Our club, now in its 47th year, holds strong connections between families, supporters, sponsors and the wider Canberra region creating a sense of community at Wests Juniors. Rugby Union in the ACT is conducted under the Australian Rugby Union Junior Pathway laws, and is governed by ACT Junior Rugby Union. The Junior Pathway laws provide age appropriate modifications at each age level which establishes a safe and fun experience for players.
A Common Question - Is Rugby safe?
A common question and not an easy one to answer. For the concerned parent, a search of the internet will open forums and content with a wide variety of information. Quite often, the worst stories are published and give a misconceived view of the realities of Rugby Union. All sport has an associated risk, and Rugby is no different, but its our approach at Wests Juniors to the continual development of coaches, assistant coaches, team managers and the players that provides confidence in our commitment to safety. Our coaches, assistant coaches and team managers are, at a minimum, required to complete Smart Rugby training and are expected to continue their development through Foundation Coach Level 1 and Developing Coach Level 2 accreditation. In addition to this, Wests Juniors are supported by our Senior club, the Western District Rugby Union Football Club, to further develop skills, technique and knowledge of the game of Rugby. Our senior grade players and coaches are involved in training sessions, development activities such as Budding Brumbies and on game day to support the Wests Juniors.
